The first edition of the Memoir was decorated with a selection of engravings originally intended for Bewick’s unpublished History of British Fishes. For the most part these have been replaced by sixty-seven of his best subjects for the British Birds, the History of Quadrupeds and animals and birds are all Bewick’s work, but a number of the vignettes in the British Birds were engraved by his talented apprentice Luke Clennell….
