A PHOENIX TOO FREQUENT Christopher Fry 1946

A PHOENIX TOO FREQUENT Christopher Fry 1946

Christopher Fry (18 December 1907 – 30 June 2005) was an English poet and playwright. He is best known for his verse dramas, notably The Lady's Not for Burning, which made him a major force in theatre in the 1940s and 1950s.

This brilliant verse-comedy, which had a wonderful reception from the critics, is based on the story by Petronius of the Ephesian widow who is determined to die of grief in her husband’s tomb, taking with her a devoted maid. A soldier accidentally interrupts this solemn occasion and evokes a train of conflict, flesh conflicting with mind, love with love, one self with another, in both the widow and himself, making them run a whole gamut of emotions within an hour….
